Swindon Designer Outlet starts £35m extension

McArthur Glen has started construction on a £35m extension of the Swindon Designer Outlet that will incorporate the historic Long Shop building, part of the Grade II-listed Great Western Railway Works, into the centre.

The regeneration will add 30 new stores, and 50,000 sq ft of new retail space, bringing the total to space to 250,000 sq ft in the outlet.

The extension will also create 350 new jobs upon completion in early 2015, increasing the total number of people employed at Swindon Designer Outlet to 1,100.

McArthurGlen’s UK managing director Sven Gaede said: “As part of the extension, we will be bringing in new, exciting brands and improving the overall shopping experience. Shoppers will now also be able to experience and enjoy first-hand the refurbished Long Shop, with its conservation ensured for future generations.”

Swindon Designer Outlet is owned by Henderson Global Investors within the Outlet Mall Partnership, a fund for institutional investors, and one in which McArthurGlen invests.

The centre saw more than 3.5 million shoppers last year and is home to retailers including Crew Clothing, French Connection, Jaeger, Kurt Geiger, L.K. Bennett and Ted Baker.
