TBC cancels August show ahead of bigger relaunch

The August edition of streetwear show TBC has been cancelled after new organisers IDEX Media decided to relaunch the show in February 2009 for an international audience.

The next TBC show will now take place in February 2009 at the Old Billingsgate Market in east London. Organisers say the new venue will be four times the size of the previous site at The Old Truman Brewery, with extra product categories and a broader casualwear and footwear offer.

Buzz Carter of IDEX Media said: “We’ve listened carefully to the feedback from brands and buyers, and it is clear the industry wants a home where TBC can develop into an international event. The Old Truman Brewery was fine for when TBC was developing, but now it’s not the venue the industry wants.”

Brands had mixed views about the new format. Boxfresh managing director Daniel Morris said: “We would love there to be a successful, international British trade fair, but the competition for TBC is Bread & Butter Barcelona. If TBC aims to be a larger show, but with local brands, it won’t work. For some in the UK it’s cheaper to travel to Barcelona than London.”

Matt Purt, who is the European brand manager of Baracuta and Gibson, said: “I don’t see why we wouldn’t be involved but the show is all about brand adjacencies.”

Ringspun sales and product development director Greg Roberts said: “It is about getting the balance between supporting a British trade show without affecting your brand credibility."
