Tesco delivery staff threaten Christmas strike

More than 700 Tesco drivers and delivery staff are threatening to strike over Christmas.

The staff in Belfast and Doncaster will vote on strike action Next week after Tesco froze pay in their regions and offered a 1.5% uplift for 2016.

Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: “We believe the current offer is far below what it can afford and what our members deserve.”

The ballot will close on December 11. Unite said a vote in favour of industrial action could see deliveries to Tesco stores in Yorkshire and Northern Ireland disrupted in the run up to Christmas, with knock on effects felt across the UK.

However, Tesco said strike action would not affect its ability to fulfil orders over Christmas.

A spokesman told City AM: “The approach from Unite is clearly counterproductive, as we have always been committed to pay discussions, and is surprising given Unite had initially agreed to new talks.”
