Tesco's six remaining Homeplus stores to close next month

Tesco is to close its six remaining Homeplus stores next month, marking the final nail in the coffin for its non-food format.

The stores in Bristol, Bracknell, Nottingham, Denton, Bromborough and Preston will close on June 27 with the loss of approximately 450 jobs.

The format was introduced by former Tesco boss Sir Terry Leahy in 2005 and the aim was to build big out-of-town stores selling the supermarket’s non-food ranges including clothing, homewares and electricals.

But the concept did not prove successful and the six stores were included in the 43 that Tesco announced it would close in January.
