As we close out another crazy year in the world of fashion, my mind wanders. Foremost in the tangled mess of crazy shoot concepts, naff TV (I really should get out more) and shoe porn, is what 2013 will have in store for us.
Trend-wise, I really hope the industry moves on this time. This isn’t so much a moan as an impassioned plea for the guardians of womenswear and menswear trends to really shift the taste levels when creating their spring 14 collections. I feel that, for perhaps the past two or three years, each season’s collections have only represented very small developments in aesthetic. A tweak here, a fiddle with a hemline there is not, for me, significant enough.
Where menswear is concerned, it’s clear where improvements need to be made. Despite some lone voices in the market claiming to the contrary, heritage and the great outdoors still pervade almost every corner of the sector. Where previously the brogues, shooting patches and tweed looked fresh, it’s now become as clichéd as any other trend: just add a beard, bike and organic bread for instant cool. Here’s hoping ‘modernity’ and ‘futurism’ are buzzwords around the menswear design departments up and down the land. And bring back denim.
With womenswear, the mix is more complex, but just as in need of a revamp. Engineered prints, while still carrying some interest, cannot last forever, in their current form at least. You only need to look to how Mary Katrantzou moved into postage stamps to see she’s eyeing the next move, but the rate at which labels refresh needs to be quicker. The same goes for conversational prints. Construction, meanwhile, needs to be given more consideration – as I’ve mentioned before, silhouettes must push out the peplum and try something else for size.
Rant over. Whatever we see unveiled come summer, I just hope it isn’t a onesie.
