The UK leads European rankings in online shopping

Almost 80% of UK shoppers made a purchase online last year, which places the UK higher than any other European Union country, according to new research from the Office of National Statistics.

Scandinavian countries reported similar figures to the UK’s 79% in 2014, with Denmark, Norway and Sweden all reporting that at least 75% of individuals made an online purchase last year, followed by Germany at 70% and France at 62%.

However the research showed that Italy lagged way behind, with just 22% of Italians completing a purchase online last year.

Ecommerce is said to account for 20% of UK business turnover in 2013, up from 16% in 2009.
