Negin Yeganegy, group ecommerce director at Yoox Net-a-Porter, spoke about her career in fashion and making it to the top of retail at Draper’s Next Generation event. Here is some of her advice for standing out from the crowd, progressing in your career and the skills luxury giant YNAP is looking for.

Having a varied career is an advantage

Yeganegy started her career in IT and consulting, before joining the Net-a-Porter group in 2014. She stressed that developing different skills across multiple disciplines can be a huge help in progressing in the fashion industry, allowing the next generation of fashion talent to keep on top of retail’s rapid pace of change. Her background in IT has been useful in her current role, she explained, as it permitted her to understand the language of technology used in the business.

YNAP is increasingly looking for candidates with hybrid skills, she said: “Change isn’t necessary, but it is beneficial. Understanding different cultures and doing different roles can help further your development.”

Never stop learning

Everyone in retail is busy, but Yeganegy combines her full time job at YNAP with studying for an executive MBA. Fortunately, she is always looking for the next challenge and gets bored when there is not something new to learn, something those starting out in their careers should bear in mind.

Stay focused on the customer

When asked what has helped YNAP stay at the top of the increasingly competitive luxury market, Yeganegy said building a strong brand, being customer focused and building trust with consumers, who see YNAP sites as a trusted authority on luxury fashion, have all been key. The business is not standing still – it uses data to help understand customers on a personal level and looking at artificial intelligence to further their experience.
