Topshop has appointed Kate Phelan, fashion director of British Vogue, as creative director.

Phelan has worked with Topshop collaboratively for a number of years, having styled the retailer’s campaign imagery and is credited as being part of the team who, along with the now boss of Whistles’Jane Shepherdson, transformed Topshop from high street retailer into the fashion heavyweight it is today.

Phelan will join Topshop in September in time for London Fashion Week and her new role, she will be responsible for everything from product development and brand identity to mapping out the retailer’s future creative direction.

The position of brand director is new for Topshop who have never had anyone in this role before.

Phelan said “I am thrilled to be joining the Topshop team as creative director. Topshop is the most influential, dynamic fashion brand on the high street, a pioneer in both store experience and designer collaborations. I look forward to contributing to Topshop’s next chapter.”

Mary Homer, managing director of Topshop, added: “I am absolutely delighted that Kate will be joining the Topshop team. Her experience and knowledge of fashion will further develop Topshop as a global fashion brand and shopping destination.”
