Topshop is target of demonstrations today

High street retailers will be bracing themselves for a raft of demonstrations about factory worker exploitation outside their stores today.

Topshop will bear the brunt of the activity with student campaign group People and Planet planning to demonstrate outside the young fashion retailer's stores in at least 14 UK cities. A demonstration will take place outside the London Oxford Circus flagship tonight at 6pm.

People and Planet will allege that Topshop is exploiting fashion industry workers. The student group's aim is to deter shoppers in the run up to Christmas.

The demonstrations come 12 months after pressure group War on Want issued its Fashion Victims report alleging the likes of Primark, Tesco and Asda were exploiting workers. The report sparked a furore of similar reports and front page headlines about manufacturing practices in the fashion industry.

Sir Philip Green has consistently denied all the allegations about Topshop.
