Two female directors step down from Tesco board

Tesco now has just one woman on its board of directors after non-executives Olivia Garfield and Jacqueline Tammenoms Bakker announced they will step down this weekend.

Garfield said she wanted to focus fully on her new role as chief executive of water company Severn Trent, but Tammenoms Bakker did not give a reason for her departure.

The move now leaves Tesco short of the government target of having 25% female board directors.

Former Barclays executive Deanna Oppenheimer is now the only woman on the 12-strong board.
