UK fashion growth on the up

Fashion growth in the UK rose to 1% between 2016 and 2017 after suffering a dip the previous year, new figures have revealed.

According to market research provider Euromonitor International, growth in the clothing and footwear market rose by 0.2 percentage points between 2016 and 2017 after a fall of 0.1 the year before.

Sportswear growth slowed last year despite outpacing other UK fashion sectors for the fifth year running, falling by 1.1 percentage points to 7.5%.

The UK sportswear market peaked between 2014 and 2015 when growth stood at 10.4%.

Menswear continues to grow faster than womenswear at 1.2%, a 0.2 percentage point rise on the year before, while womenswear saw a 0.3 increase to 0.9%.

Footwear growth remained flat between 2015 and 2017 at 0.6% in both periods.

Childrenswear continued to grow between 2016 and 2017 at 1.6%, though saw a slight dip of 0.1 percentage points on the year before.

Worldwide, the fashion market grew by 4% between 2016 and 2017, led by sportswear at 6.8%.
