Ultimo design director plots new clothing categories

Lingerie brand Ultimo is to expand into new clothing categories following the appointment of a director of design for its Ultimo Couture eveningwear collection.

Brian Rennie joined this month from lifestyle brand Gant, where he was creative director. Prior to that he spent 20 years at luxury womens-wear brand Escada, latterly as design director.

Rennie said he was discussing launching additional product categories with Ultimo chief executive Michelle Mone, including women’s tops and day dresses, which he hoped to introduce as early as spring 11.

Ultimo Couture launched last month as a 15-piece eveningwear collection for Debenhams, designed by Mone. Rennie will have input into a 20-piece Christmas collection for the department store chain but his first full collection will be a 60-piece spring 11 range. Retail prices will still start at £100 but will rise to £400 at the top end.

The spring 11 collections will build on the basic lingerie technology employed in the Ultimo Couture launch collection, with the addition of slimming and cleavage-enhancing styles.
