Uniqlo chief executive jumps ship to Chanel

Uniqlo’s European chief executive Berndt Hauptkorn has quit the Japanese casualwear retailer to join French luxury label Chanel.

Hauptkorn, who was also senior vice president and global officer of Uniqlo’s parent company Fast Retailing, has been with the business for just over three years.

He is joining Chanel as president of Europe and the Middle East and will oversee retail, wholesale, fashion, accessories, watches and beauty, Drapers’ sister title Retail Week reports.

Prior to joining Uniqlo, Hauptkorn was chief executive of Bally between 2009 and 2012, having served as chief executive of the Labelux Group at the time it acquired the luxury accessories brand in 2008.

Takao Kuwahara, chief operating officer of Uniqlo Europe, has taken over Berndt Hauptkorn’s responsibilities until further notice.
