US influencers warned over Instagram ads

Influencers and celebrities in the US have been cautioned over the failure to clearly disclose promotional posts on Instagram.

The US consumer regulator, the Federal Trade Commission, sent notices to 90 individuals and marketing firms to alert them to the issue. Its rules state that any endorsement of a brand must be “clearly and conspicuously” labelled as such.

This is the first time the regulator has intervened on the issue, and was in part prompted by reseach from advocacy group Public Citizen, which found that 113 influencers and celebrities, including Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, had endorsed products without acknowledging payment.
