Walmart China boss in line for Asda top job

US firm Walmart is reportedly poised to name Sean Clarke, head of its operations in China, as the new chief executive of Asda, replacing Andy Clarke.

The news, first reported by Sky News, will come as a surprise to many, who expected the appointment of Asda’s incoming chief operating officer Roger Burnley. Burnley resigned from Sainsbury’s last year to take up the COO job.

Clarke worked at Asda in the early part of his career as its commercial finance director, before taking roles in Canada, Germany and Japan, and later moving to China. He is now president and chief executive of the 400-store China business.
