Warm weather heats up fashion sales at John Lewis

Fashion sales rose 19.8% for the week to March 29 at John Lewis, as the sunshine encouraged shoppers to invest in their summer wardrobes.

Women’s accessories soared 60.6% year on year, driven by the sale of sunglasses, which doubled their sales on the same period in 2013. Women’s shoes and handbags also produced “stellar results” for the week, according to the retailer.

Total sales rose 5.9% to £81.28m as the spring temperatures and Mother’s Day gifting saw footfall both in store and online reach its highest levels so far this half, rising 39.5%.

Online sales climbed 31% driven by “good availability” and price matching.

Jon Williams, director of merchandising operations at John Lewis, said: “With the blue skies feeling like they are here to stay (for a few days at least!) and the school holidays upon us we are well set for the all-important Easter trading weeks.”
