Warm weather hits fashion sales at John Lewis

John Lewis has posted a 0.4% drop in fashion sales for the week to December 12 as mild weather stunted sales of coats and knitwear.

The retailer said womenswear in particular had “tough trading week” but sales of handbags were up 5.4%.

Total sales were up 3% for the week compared with last year to £155.2m. Online sales increased by 15%, with mobile leading the way up 43% on 2014.

John Lewis launched an app this week called Kitchen Drawer, which allows shoppers to access their receipts online.

Mark Lewis, retail director at John Lewis, said: “Despite the mild weather, it was a strong gifting week and, as we go into the last shopping weekend before Christmas, the indication from our customers is that there is still a lot of shopping to be done.

“With Christmas Day not until Friday, and all of our online delivery options available well into the coming week, our focus now is on ensuring that our shops and online operations continue to deliver our customers’ Christmas gifts.”
