Warm weather hits sales at John Lewis

John Lewis has reported a 5.9% drop in sales to £71.96m for the week to August 22, as warm weather last weekend kept shoppers away from the high street.

Fashion sales fell 4.4% compared to the same period last year which was the run up to the bank holiday weekend.

The department store chain said sales of summer ranges were “strong” across all categories, while there was “clear and encouraging” interest in new season collections as the Back to School peak was in full swing.

Online sales were up 6.1% for the week.

Liz Mihell head of selling at home in John Lewis said: “Looking ahead, there are clear opportunities this weekend in making the most of the bank holiday footfall and also the peak days of Back to School. We can be confident in and ambitious for our new season assortments. These are highlighted in the beautiful ‘a love of the new’ campaign which looks really compelling in the shops and online too.”

  • Lesson for all retailers is to have the right product in at the right time, not when the brands tell you to. August is summer for everyone living in the real world, so why not sell summer items in the summer instead of pushing winter items virtually nobody is interested in?
