Warm winter hits fashion sales at John Lewis

Fashion sales at John Lewis & Partners fell by 11% for the week to 10 November after the retailer was hit by “unseasonably mild weather” and the impact of its price-matching promise.

Total sales at the department store were also down, falling by 8.3%. However, premium women’s accessories were up 11% on the same week this year. Watches and shoes were singled out as two strongly performing categories.

  • Warm weather? Or are shoppers starting to realise JL is expensive. Transacting price promises is a drag on time at the till. It also creates dwell time reinforcing the premium to start with.

  • It's not so much that JLP is expensive, it's just would you pay that particular SRP at JLP? Every retailer has its limits depending on how it is seen by the consumer. Never overstep it.
