Westfield Stratford shopping centre was evacuated for two hours at lunchtime today following the discovery of a “suspicious” package.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed it had ordered the centre to be evacuated, but by 4pm it had posted an update on social media site Twitter to say the incident had been “stood down” and the centre reopened.
During the incident, a police spokesman told The Metro newspaper that police officers were “dealing with a suspicious package”.
Witnesses described hearing alarms in the centre ringing and police ordering shoppers out of the building to stand behind cordons while the package was investigated. It is not yet known where in the centre the package was found.
There were also reports from witnesses that Stratford station, a hub for underground and overground services, was temporarily closed.
Westfield Stratford sits on the edge of the Olympic Park, the venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
