Wet weather gear boosts sales at John Lewis

John Lewis reported a 7.3% increase in fashion sales for the week to February 15, bolstered by the sale of waterproofs including Wellington boots, mac jackets and umbrellas.

Total sales for the week were up by 6.4% to £67.32m while a 26.4% increase in online sales offset any effect of slowing footfall in store.

Valentine’s Day gifts including watches and fragrances also experienced buoyed trade and men’s cufflinks were up 14% for the week.

Tamworth was the best performing store for the period up 30.4%, followed by High Wycombe which was up 18.1%. On the other end of the spectrum Exeter was down19.9% while Newcastle dropped by 13.6%.

Ed Connolly, buying director of EHT at John Lewis, said the week’s “good trading result” was up on the first two weeks of the financial year.

He added: “Half term opportunity lies ahead in week 4 as we look to continue our sales momentum.”
