Whiteley Shopping Centre, 320,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, opened in Hampshire yesterday (May 23) kicking off five days of festivities over the bank holiday weekend.
One of only three UK shopping and leisure schemes opening this year, Whiteley is a joint venture development by British Land and USS Ltd.
Anchored by a 60,000 sq ft M&S, Whiteley currently has 58 retailers including Topshop, Next, H&M, River Island, Clarks, Schuh, and JD Sports. Cafés and restaurants in the centre include Costa Coffee, Frankie & Benny’s, Prezzo and Starbucks.
Centre manager Neil Carter emphasised that Whiteley had been “designed for the shopper”.
He said: “Our opening hours, free parking for up to three hours, the mix of retailers, cafes and restaurants and the services to assist shoppers, recognise that people shop in different ways on different days.”
Located between the two harbour cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, Whiteley has a catchment area of 1.2 million people with an estimated £3.1bn potential spend. The centre is situated adjacent to an existing Tesco supermarket, and also benefits from accessibility via junction nine of the M27.
