Burton, Hugo Boss, Oasis and Oliver Sweeney have joined the raft of high street retailers on pre-Christmas Sale today, as Ernst & Young said that the level of pre-Christmas discounting had reached record levels.
Ernst & Young said that discounting had averaged 37% off this Christmas, up from 34.6% last year. It added that it expected the retail sector as a whole to suffer a 2% fall in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period.
Ernst & Young retail director Jason Gordon said: "A near total collapse in consumer confidence driven by falling house prices, surging unemployment and the dismal economic outlook has left shoppers with little festive cheer in the run up to Christmas. It's no surprise that many retailers have had to offer record levels of discounts and promotions."
Debenhams will also kick off its 50% five-day Sale today.
According to Patonz Compshop 23% of the central London retailers it monitors on a daily basis are now on Sale. It defines retailers as being on Sale as those which have promotional signage in their windows.
Meanwhile Tesco is reported to be planning to open 179 of its Tesco Extra stores and 10 of its Homeplus stores on Boxing Day.
