Zara UK operating profit grows 31%

Zara UK increased sales by 8.1% to £494.8m in the full year to January 31, while gross margin edged up from 54.7% to 55% during the 12-month period.

Operating profit increased 31% to £49.1m compared with the previous year.

The UK arm of Spain’s Inditex Group said selling and distribution costs increased by 3.6% during the year, when it refurbished various stores including a large-scale refit in Liverpool and a number of smaller refits.

Zara had 66 UK stores as of January 31, the same number as the previous year. The company opened a standalone menswear store in Birmingham in November, opposite an existing womenswear and kidswear store which opened in 2003. It plans to open in other locations when suitable opportunities arise.

Zara employs the full-time equivalent of 2,850 people in the UK.
