No Sports Direct and JJB Sports merger on cards, OFT says

The Office of Fair Trading has ruled that Sports Direct’s stakebuilding in rival JJB Sports does not represent a merger situation.

The OFT said today that, on the information currently available to it, Sports Direct International’s acquisition of a stake in JJB Sports, did not represent a merger situation, under the provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002.

The OFT launched an investigation into a possible merger when Sports Direct bought a 4.7% stake in JJB Sports in October, which could have created concerns over competition in the sportswear sector.
