Online clothing, footwear and accessories sales rocketed 26% in March, compared to the previous year, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
Month-on-month sales within clothing, footwear and accessories also soared 28%. The fashion sector remains the strongest performing retail sector online.
Online retail sales as a whole rose 19% in March, which is lower than previous years, indicating that online spending has not been immune to the credit crunch. Total sales were up 9% month-on-month.
Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail for Capgemini UK, said: “The clothing, footwear and accessories sector continues to be a strong performer. This reflects the improved quality of the offering e-retailers are providing for this segment.”
He added: “Online is proving to be a key battle ground for the retail sector during these tough times. Retailers that have developed their online offering have been able to reap the benefits of growing trade online and have also increased their influence over high street trading, as consumers turn to the internet to support their purchase decisions.”
During the first quarter of 2009, the Index recorded an average year-on-year growth of 17%. This is ahead of its annual growth forecast of 15% for the e-retail market during 2009.
