Own brand fashion triumphs at John Lewis

Own brand fashion enjoyed a strong week at John Lewis, with overall fashion sales up by 13.5% in the week to February 9.

Sales of new spring merchandise were up by 25%, with menswear performing particularly well. Handbag sales were also strong, up 40% compared to the same week last year.

Overall sales at the department store were up 22% up on last year and 27% up on two years ago.

Online sales were up 36%, while Croydon was the strongest performing physical store, with sales growing 36%. Nottingham also performed well, with sales up by 30%.

Nat Wakeley, director of selling operations for region A at John Lewis, said the week’s figures had been “flattered” by heavy snowfall in the same week last year.

Yesterday, it emerged that John Lewis is to cut 325 department manager roles, despite recording one of its most successful Christmas trading periods ever.
