Oxford Street to be pedestrianised over Bank Holiday

Landmark shopping destination London Oxford Street will close to traffic on Saturday May 23 - the second Bank Holiday weekend in May.

The west of London Oxford Street will be closed to traffic for one day and some stores will open until 9pm as part of a drive to boost visitors to the area.

To entice families, West End shops will put on over £250,000 worth of free entertainment throughout the day.

Richard Dickinson, chief executive, New West End Company said: “This bank holiday event is all about encouraging families into London’s West End, particularly Oxford Street, for the beginning of the summer season.”

West End stores including Selfridges, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, John Lewis, House of Fraser, Primark, and Boots will provide free entertainment, including live music, in-store offers and promotions.

Oxford Street west will be free of traffic from 12pm through to 5pm.
