Paul Smith

Paul Smith owner of menswear indie Bakers Tailoring in Darlington, County Durham

Brands include Canali, Pringle, Aquascutum

How is trade at the moment? Trade is very good as we are still in wedding season. Contemporary suits for weddings are popular and grey shiny suits are the bestsellers.

Will you be visiting any trade shows? I will be visiting Moda Menswear. I don’t always, but I feel it is important in the current climate to look around. There is the danger of becoming stagnant and not realising it.

How do you think indies are faring against the high street? Independents should be doing better as customers want service and are more interested in fit and quality right now. My made-to-measure business is going strong, for instance. In the business sector, people want classic suiting rather than contemporary styling, and they are prepared to invest.

Will you be putting prices up for autumn? I put my prices up for spring 09, partly because wholesale prices had gone up and partly because I thought I was priced too cheaply and could attract a new customer with higher prices.
