Having been crowned this year’s Drapers Awards Fashion Retailing Personality of the Year, Beth Butterwick continues to lead the turnaround of the over-50s value retailer Bonmarché with both style and passion.
In October, Butterwick demonstrated her confidence in the business’ performance by migrating from AIM (the London Stock Exchange’s international market for smaller growing companies) to London’s main stock market, a move which was backed up by the latest full year results for the full year to March 28 in which revenues grew 8.7% to £178.6m and pre-tax profit rose 55.3% to £12.4m. Despite a small blip in the subsequent 13 weeks to June 27, when like-for-like sales fell 1.7%, which was blamed on the unpredictable weather, Bonmarché under Butterwick has continued to carve its own niche within the over-50s and plus size market, forging a stronger identity with core shoppers and offering them more fashion-led clothing suitable to their body shapes. Online has also been a key growth area for Butterwick, rising by 36% in the year to March 28.
