As founder and chief executive of Italian etailer Yoox Group, Federico Marchetti was not previously particularly well known in the UK fashion industry.
But that changed in March after it was announced that Yoox had signed a deal to merge with London-based luxury ecommerce business Net-a-Porter Group, creating a €1.3bn (£940m) industry leader.
Marchetti has a degree in economics and an MBA and began his career as an investment banker. After working as a consultant to retailers and fashion designers in the US and Italy for several years, like Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet he could see a future for luxury goods online. He founded Yoox Group in 2000, the same year as Massenet launched Net-a-Porter.
It was originally stated that Massenet would serve as executive chairman of the newly formed group, but she resigned in September, a month before the merger completed. Marchetti is now firmly on our radar which is reflected in his new entry in this year’s Top 100.
