26. David Shepherd, chief operating officer for trading, Arcadia

David Shepherd

Position last year: 27

Shepherd rises a position in this year’s list off the back off Arcadia’s international growth, which has been his focus for the last three years. During the year ended August 29, Arcadia opened five new company-owned Topshop/Topman stores in the US, bringing its total there to nine. The men’s and women’s wear businesses also opened their first wholly-owned store in Europe in Amsterdam in February. Both are now also available in India, having launched through local etailer Jabong.com in September.

Closer to home, Shepherd was also involved in the move to trial Arcadia fascias Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Evans in five Tesco stores across the country, a potentially revolutionary move to capitalise on the growing clothing appetite in Britain’s supermarkets. It is indicative of the business’s ongoing review of its UK store portfolio which comprised 86 closures during the year, bringing its current total to 2,358.
