Menswear buyer, Matalan, aged 27
Since joining as a trainee buyer in 2007, Adam Pickup has progressed quickly through the ranks at value retailer Matalan. Due to his outstanding hard work and the strong performance of the menswear department he has recently taken on new responsibilities for some of the more fashion-led products.
“There is probably no limit to what Adam can achieve. He always spends extra time to deliver over and above his role. He is popular with his colleagues and is demonstrating a growing leadership role within his team,” enthuses head of menswear buying Ian Silcock.
Pickup began working in fashion retail on the shopfloor aged 16, and says knowing the industry from store to factory has helped later in his career. He says Silcock, who has about 40 years’ experience, has been a “great person to learn from”, and that to do his role well he has had to learn to trust others rather than taking on everything himself. He has to be more of a “car salesman”, adding “if you feel strongly enough for a product you need to be able to sell”.
Planning has been Pickup’s key to success. “The best advice I could give is make sure you’re as prepared as you possibly can be for every meeting and range review you have. You only get one chance at some meetings/range reviews, so you need to make sure it goes right.”
