Merchandiser, Berwin Retail, aged 27

Matthew Saunders attributes his early success to the support and guidance of his mentors. “In such a short period of time in the industry I have had the opportunity to work with some truly talented buyers, merchandisers and designers who I have learnt so much from,” he says. “But the one person who really helped to develop my skills and help me get to where I am today is Ben Davidson, who was my senior merchandiser at Republic. He had the time to sit down and explain his thought processes. The one piece of advice that always sticks in my mind from Ben was when he said to me: ‘If that was your last £100,000 to spend of your budget, would you really buy it? Treat every buy with that in mind’.”

Saunders has taken all his learnings to Berwin Retail, where he has excelled. “Matthew has quickly established key business needs and shown an exceptional level of skill and commitment in the role,” says retail director David Cashmore. “This has
been demonstrated through his natural ability to interpret and present data while also introducing new analytical techniques. This has already delivered a positive contribution to the business in both sales and margin. Matthew is a popular member of the team and has quickly earned the respect of his direct reports, peers and the senior management team.”
