Design manager, Missguided, aged 27
As design manager at Missguided, Natasha Varma has been instrumental in the etailer’s success, which had a sales increase of 102.2% to £60m for the year to March 31, 2013. She travels to far-flung locations such as Hong Kong and Tokyo to gain inspiration and credits her varied experience as the secret to her success.
After graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester in 2008 with a BA Hons in Fashion Design, Varma cut her fashion teeth by working in various garment factories. “Having started at the bottom of the industry this gave me a great insight into how a garment really works from sketch to production stage. It is key to understanding the nature of a garment and how it all works in order to become a great designer,” she says.
She supplied Missguided during that time and decided the brand was the “perfect fit” for her. “I was the first designer at Missguided and within my two years here I have built up a team of designers that I now manage across multi products,” she says.
Missguided founder and managing director Nitin Passi says Varma has a “solid understanding” of who the Missguided customer is.
“She has the ability to translate the key trends and reinvent them for our customer base across multi categories while raising the bar and innovating the brand’s handwriting. She consistently produces winning designs which sell well.”
