The Hargreaves family has fingers in many pies, with Matalan now run by founder John’s son Jason, his other son Jamey owning Wolsey, denim brand Blk Denim and 50% of womenswear design label Julien Macdonald, while his daughter, Maxine Hargreaves-Adams, owns mainstream womenswear brand Fenn Wright Manson, premium brand Nicole Farhi and 50% of mid-market womenswear brand Damsel in a Dress.
The family climbed the rankings this year as John Hargreaves won the Drapers Lifetime Achievement Award in November as Matalan celebrated its 30th anniversary and the business moved to a new purpose-built 700,000 sq ft head office in Knowsley, Merseyside to house the expanding firm. The value retailer also made its debut on London’s Oxford Street in June, marking the third store in a series of high street trials that deviate from its traditional out-of-town locations.
However problems at its warehouse caused earnings to fall 90% in the second quarter to the end of August, although the chain said the distribution centre’s performance has since improved.
Maxine Hargreaves-Adams also relaunched Fenn Wright Manson for spring 15 into selected John Lewis, House of Fraser, Arnotts and Brown Thomas stores, which was well received.
