Former Asda chief executive Andy Bond and former Sainsbury’s Tu boss Adrian Mountford stormed onto Drapers’ Top 100 this year after opening the first 50 stores of new value chain Pep & Co between July to September.
Targeting secondary market towns to appeal to a ‘mum on a budget’ and backed by South African retail billionaire Christo Wiese (see entry number 6), the chain offers a range of womenswear, kidswear and home decoration, with prices starting at £1 and rising to a top price of £25.
Following the launch and in response to customer demand, the duo also launched a small range of men’s gifting in November, which will be expanded to a bigger range for most stores for spring 16.
Credited as one of the fastest roll-outs of this scale in UK retail history, Bond and Mountford have made their mark on the UK high streets with Pep & Co and have ambitious plans to expand the chain further, with around 50 new store slated for 2016 and potential for up to 900 in the longer term. This is a dynamic duo to keep an eye on going forwards.
