62. Anthony Thompson, chief executive, Fat Face

Anthony Thompson, Fat Face

Position last year: 63

Not afraid to rise to the big challenges facing retailers today, Anthony Thompson is proving himself to be a headstrong leader at Fat Face, taking the business in bullish new directions. This has included an ambitious push into the US. The first store opened in Portland in early November, with Thompson hoping his thorough planning will enable him to succeed where so many British retailers have previously failed. As a clear ambassador for the brand, Thompson has also steadfastly resisted the draw to get involved in Black Friday discounting, aiming instead to protect both brand image and margin by donating 10% of sales made over the weekend to charity.

Fat Face’s full year results to May 30 support Thompson’s ongoing growth strategy with total sales up 2.7% to £205.4m, and ecommerce sales up 11.1%, now representing 16.2% of sales. The UK store portfolio also increased 8% to more than 350,000 sq ft during the period.
