87. Julie Deane, founder and CEO, Cambridge Satchel Company

Julie Deane

New entrant

Having founded the leather bag brand from her kitchen table in 2008, Deane has seen phenomenal success culminating this year in the launch of a new men’s collection, a standalone men’s store in London’s Seven Dials, her receiving an OBE from the Queen and also her appointment by the government to run an independent survey into self-employment and what needs to be done to encourage future entrepreneurs.

A bubbly entrepreneur herself, Deane is all too aware of the challenges facing new UK start-ups and is a keen advocate of the Made in Britain story, with all her bags still made on these shores. This year she has also taken the brave step of launching into China with her products now available on Tmall. And if all this wasn’t enough, her successes this year were topped off in November with her bag label being crowned Best Mainstream Brand at the 25th anniversary Drapers Awards.
