Under Mark Newton-Jones the turnaround of Mothercare has continued apace this year. Despite group sales dropping 6.1% to £349.9m in the 28 weeks to October 10, the chief executive entered autumn on a confident note, with pre-tax profits up 112.1% to £7m.
UK like-for-like sales increased 3.8% and total UK sales rose by 236.6% while the UK underlying loss was £6.1m, down from £13.5m in the same period last year. UK margin was up by 76 basis points and online sales were up 22% against 2014.
Newton-Jones, a confident retail turnaround specialist - has been focusing Mothercare on rationalising its store portfolio, closing 16 stores, refurbishing eight and re-siting four, taking its UK total to 173. Internationally, the group added a net 37 stores with international now accounting for 66% of worldwide sales.
Despite the turnaround taking shape and his confidence in the future strategy, Newton-Jones acknowledged in October that ”there is much more to be done.”
