94. Tom and Ruth Chapman, founders and joint chairmen,

Tom and Ruth Chapman,

Position last year: 91

This year marked the end of an era for husband-and-wife team Tom and Ruth Chapman when they stepped down as joint chief executives of the luxury indie mini-chain after 27 years in July, handing over the reins to chief operating officer Ulric Jerome.

Jerome joined the business in 2013 and has since overseen a tech overhaul, as well as relaunching the website to be fully responsive in April, which accounts for 85% of the retailer’s £130m annual sales. But Tom Chapman said he and his wife will “remain completely committed and involved in the strategic development of the business”.

In January the business, which stocks 400 brands, relaunched its womenswear own-label Raey and in July it appointed former Net-a-Porter fashion editor Natalie Brewster as its new style director.

And the strategy appears to be working, since has forecast that its turnover will more than triple over the next four years, reaching £425m by 2019.
