Innovation has been on the agenda at German etailer Zalando in 2019. In October, it outlined an extensive new sustainability strategy, which includes going carbon neutral across its own operations, deliveries and returns; eliminating single-use plastics; and for 20% of its gross merchandise volume to comprise more sustainable products by 2023. It will also educate customers on how to make their clothing last longer.

It has also pledged to make its senior management teams more diverse in gender, nationality and education.

One of three co-CEOs, Schneider is responsible for the “fashion perspective” and works with 2,000-plus brand partners, to which it offers marketing and fulfilment services. It is running a trial with Adidas, under which orders from the sports giant’s own website will be fulfilled from Zalando’s Paris warehouse.

The etailer has enjoyed strong sales growth. Revenue grew by 26% to €1.5bn (£1.3bn) in the third quarter of 2019, after its site visits hit a record 1 billion. It achieved EBIT of €6.3m (£5.4m).
