Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Ben Taylor and Alice Liptrot, co-founders, Country of Origin

Ages: 28 and 29

Entrepreneurial couple Ben Taylor and Alice Liptrot co-founded Country of Origin in 2014 from their Brighton flat with the aspiration of creating a sustainable knitwear brand.

Five years on and Country of Origin has more than 80 stockists around the world, including John Lewis and New York’s Bergdorf Goodman for autumn 19.

The duo are committed to transparent production and reviving traditional skills, and this year the brand opened a 7,000 sq ft factory in Leicester, where it produces its vibrant, contemporary jumpers.

The brand’s 70-piece autumn 19 collection was fully made in the UK and it is now experimenting with recycled yarn in a bid to become even more sustainable.

Taylor advises other budding fashion entrepreneurs: “Learning to delegate is so important. Starting a business from scratch is very personal and it’s very difficult to trust others with your baby. But the only way to build something is to bring in talented people who can take on important roles.”

He adds: “Growing a business takes a long time and some serious working hours. It’s difficult but, if you believe in it, don’t give up.”
