Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Bleue Burnham, head of sustainability, Oliver Spencer

Age: 27

In his three years working as head of sustainability for Oliver Spencer, Bleue Burnham has helped the premium menswear brand transition its stores and offices to renewable energy, dramatically reduce its packaging footprint, move a large percentage of its cotton to Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and introduce other lower-impact fabrics.

Following a long-held passion, Burnham studied business management with a focus on fashion and sustainable business at Manchester Metropolitan University from 2011 to 2015, where he achieved first class honours.

“For Oliver Spencer, it important that we reduce our greenhouse gas footprint as much as possible, and that we work towards a circular model of business,” he says. “One of the first changes we made to our packaging to bring its footprint down was to remove unnecessary additions from garments, such as folding paper and collar card. This was a simple change to make with highly effective environmental outcomes, which reduced our carbon footprint by 36,000 kg annually.”

He balances working for Oliver Spencer with entrepreneurial flair. In 2018, he launched an eponymous jewellery brand. Stockists include Harvey Nichols, Matchesfashion and Ssense. Unsurprisingly, the Bleue Burnham brand also has a sustainability focus – it uses recycled precious metals and packaging, and a tree is planted for each product sold.
