Drapers Next Generation: Talking point

As a member of our 30 Under 30, what advice would you give to fashion’s next generation?

Laura Gilbert, womenswear buyer at premium indie Coggles in York

“Take lots of risks and put yourself out of your comfort zone. Someone once said to me you’re more likely to regret not doing something than doing something wrong, so just give it a go. What’s also important is making connections.”

Liam Price, digital merchandiser at womenswear chain Warehouse

“My first merchandising boss told me whenever you’re at a company, have two people you can call on when you leave to be your biggest advocates in the industry. Every company I’ve left I’ve had two people I can still go for a coffee with.”

Jack Wilkinson, merchandiser at young fashion chain Internaçionale

“I believe you make your own luck through hard work, but you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time. Also, don’t burn any bridges - you never know who you’re going to meet again so leave on good terms with everyone.”

Ahmed Khan, store manager at menswear retailer Moss Bros

“My advice comes from my line manager - he looks at people rather than the business. I like his philosophy because it’s the people that make the business, so he invests his time and energy in the people and as a result the business looks after itself.”
