Drapers Top 100 2016 – 16. Anne Pitcher, managing director, Selfridges

This year Selfridges managing director Anne Pitcher led the department store into the next phases of the £300m project to regenerate its grade II-listed Oxford Street flagship. Its innovative 37,000 sq ft Body Studio opened in April – the biggest new project space the department store has opened to date – as a destination dedicated to bodywear, lingerie, swimwear, sleepwear, hosiery and loungewear brands, capitalising on the current trend.

In July, Pitcher unveiled the new 20,000 sq ft Designer Studio, housing 60 contemporary and luxury brands including Kenzo, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Toga. The first chapter of its Accessories Hall, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, was the final addition this year, opening in November. These extensive renovations investments dented operating profits by 1.9% to £152m in the year to 30 January, but sales were up 5% to £1.4bn – and the refurbishment will help to secure Selfridges’ reputation for brilliant bricks-and-mortar retail experiences.
