It has not been the easiest year for Angela Spindler. The tough economic climate has hit N Brown Group, which owns brands including Jacamo, Simply Be and JD Williams.

Despite this, she managed to steer it into revenue growth in the six months to 27 August. Group sales edged up 1% year on year to £429.4m. Pre-tax profits fell by almost 20% to £31.6m, but this was better than analysts expected, and the group expects to make a full-year pre-tax profit of £80m.

Now in her third year at the helm, Spindler has been working to increase the flexibility in N Brown’s supply chain and introduce shorter lead times. It has doubled the amount it sources from Europe over the last two years.

This was a much-needed step change. N Brown Group has also continued to champion different body shapes and sizes, including by seeking a “real man” to star in Jacamo’s autumn 17 campaign.
