Alessandro Michele’s appointment as creative director of Gucci in 2015 sent a shockwave through the industry. Unknown to the public, questions abounded: who is he and what is he going to do with this Italian mega-brand – the jewel in Kering’s crown?

What unfolded was quite unexpected.Michele has reinvented Gucci with a vintage-tinged, eclectic and romantic vision – hero items are sell-outs and luxury buyers continually list Gucci as their bestseller.

Results for the third quarter of 2016 show a 17% rise in sales at Gucci, which has helped boost parent group Kering to a 15-year high – not bad for a quick brand turnaround. What is more, you only have to visit any of the UK’s high street stores or glance at the most recent catwalk collections to see the influence Michele’s new look Gucci is having on the industry. The “Gucci effect” is still in full swing.
