Drapers Top 100 2017 – 25. Angela Spindler, chief executive, N Brown Group

Angela Spindler has edged up the Top 100 following her transformation of the traditional home shopping business into an agile online retailer. Revenue continued to grow, up 5.6% year on year to £453.4m in the first half of 2017, and adjusted pre-tax profit edged up 1.7% to £32.2m. A sourcing review has cut lead times across its brands, which include Simply Be, JD Williams, and Jacamo.

Spindler has continued to champion gender diversity in retail, telling the BBC that she sends all-male shortlists back to recruiters. Speaking to Drapers, she added that she hopes young women’s ambitions career plans will help address the gender imbalance.

On a less-positive note, N Brown closed five loss-making dual-fascia Simply Be and Jacamo stores this year, as a result of weak high street footfall and business rate rises.
