Although it faced some turmoil earlier in the year when Icelandic owner Kaupthing put it up for sale, 2017 has been largely positive for womenswear retailer Coast. In November, it announced that sales for the year to 28 February were up 5.6% to £85.2m following the completion of its three-year turnaround plan, which included a restructuring. EBITDA was £3.4m, compared with a pre-tax profit of £1.3m in 2016 and a loss of £10.8m in 2015.
Skinner’s success in turning the business around was recognised in November, when Coast was named Fashion Retail Business of the Year (£30m-£100m turnover) at the Drapers Awards. Judges noted its focus on customer experience, both in-store and online.
